“Clearing the Blocks Between You and Your Baby”
“I was able to figure out how to live this journey with peace and confidence and a healthy degree of feminine badassery. I wanted to show other women how to do the same.”
That was how Rosanne Austin describes her new book, “Am I The Reason I’m Not Getting Pregnant?”.
I love that phrase “feminine badassery.”
Are Your Judgments Holding You Back?
When we chatted about her book and the launch, Rosanne told me that this book is her way of helping women to question the stories that they tell themselves about their life, their situation, and their limitations.
“Sometimes when you have stories or underlying judgements about what is or isn’t possible for you, you can be held back from the options,” Rosanne told me.
If you have judgements about IVF and tell yourself that you don’t ever want to do it, you’re ruling out that option. That’s just one example she uses to show how people can block themselves from options.
“This book is about doing everything you can to position yourself for success. When you can take control of your thoughts and beliefs, you can completely change the playing field for yourself.”
Peppered with tons of positive success stories, the book lays out a systematic, step-by-step method for taking control of what you think and believe about yourself.
I’m nodding at this point because that’s what Circle+Bloom is all about: using the power of our minds to create the life we want.
#BumpSquad: Tracy’s Story
I asked Rosanne to tell me more about the method she details in her book, and how it works for people. She pointed me to Chapter 5 (“#BumpSquad”), where she tells the story of Tracy.
Tracy was a super high-powered, accomplished tech professional. She had been struggling with her fertility since early adulthood. Doctors told her that due to fibroid tumors, it would be a long shot for her to get pregnant – either naturally or with fertility treatments.
For two decades, Tracy lived with the fear that she would never be able to have a family of her own.
She sought out support and coaching from Austin, and two months into working together, Tracy meet with her doctor about her upcoming IVF transfer. Her doctor advised Tracy not to go forward with the transfer because he believed there was almost no chance it would work.
In the past, Tracy might have accepted this medical opinion. She might have backed down, and surrendered to the stories that she and the doctors had been telling about her all along.
But she had done some work on rewriting some of her beliefs about herself.
So, Tracy first asked the doctor if her fibroid could endanger her own life, or that of her potential baby. He said no, there was no risk from the fibroid. He just didn’t think it would work.
Tracy told him to schedule the transfer anyway.
(Fist pump!)
Two weeks later she was pregnant. She carried to term, and now has a son. And today, Tracy is in her second trimester with her second child – a pregnancy that occurred naturally, without any medical intervention.
If she hadn’t believed in the possibility for IVF to work for her – despite what the doctors told her – then she never would have reached her happy ending.
From Struggle, to Baby, to Book
“There is no direct correlation between how hard you work and the outcome on your fertility journey.” This is how Rosanne explains the feeling of powerlessness that comes with infertility.
“It doesn’t matter how intelligent, strong, or successful you are in other areas of your life. When you’re going through infertility, you feel like you’re failing, and you feel powerless.”
She knows; she lived it too. Rosanne went through many rounds of IUI, IVF, and FET before eventually realizing that what she really needed was to work on changing her mindset.
“I was completely distracted from the bigger picture. Struggling with infertility forced me to look inward and get myself right. It was an opportunity to prepare myself for my son. I parent differently today than I would have if my son had come when I wanted him to.”
Now that her “miracle boy” is here, Rosanne is sharing her process for using mindset to position yourself for fertility success.
“Women need to know that they don’t have to be perfect, or anything other than themselves,” Rosanne tells me.
“You are already worthy now. Just get yourself into the best possible position, kick those blocks out of the way, and go for it.”
