If someone tells you that improving your health will be tough, don’t give up hope.
Nothing is quite as shocking when you’re in your late teens as being told that you may never have children. While getting pregnant certainly isn’t a priority at that age, it can be a major blow to your self-confidence. What’s wrong with me?
I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome quite young. PCOS is a hormone imbalance that affects 5-10% of women in the US, basically throwing your ovaries into overdrive which causes your body to produce many cysts (“poly”) instead of healthy eggs. It also comes with a host of potential side-effects like weight gain, insulin resistance, and hair growth (where you don’t want hair to grow).
Can you imagine the niggling thought in the back of your head—will I ever be able to have a child?—while meeting potential life partners throughout your twenties? The pressure’s great enough to find the right person!
Thankfully, I was able to get pregnant. While my first child came quite easily, my second child was an altogether different story. We tried for years to conceive another child, unsuccessfully. I became desperate—I would get a twinge in the pit of my stomach when I saw a mommy-to-be, and I swooned over adorable baby clothing and that bewitching baby-powder, new-baby scent.
I knew I should listen to everyone and just be happy with the one child I had, and a few times the pregnancy test came back positive, only to find out weeks later that the pregnancies were not viable and needed to be terminated. I was heartbroken. A failure.
It happened eventually, and I’m blessed with two beautiful, healthy children. But I began to notice I wasn’t the only one experiencing fertility issues. A close friend of mine was also having trouble getting pregnant, and I knew I had to do something.
The emotions we carry around with us, especially anger and anxiety can completely sap your energy. They can also be destructive to your hormonal and immune systems, which in turn can affect fertility. Meditation is one of the most powerful natural relaxation techniques you can employ to combat anger and anxiety. Read more about the science behind our work.
My goal with Circle+Bloom is to help others like you take a more proactive approach to your health and wellbeing. While you should always see a doctor if you suspect serious health problems or infertility, you can use the power of visualization and meditation to change your mindset, how you feel, and expel negative energy that gets in the way of your dreams and aspirations.
