Guest blog by Dr. Vita, a holistic menstrual coach who helps women with irregular periods, fertility, PCOS, fibroids and other hormonal issues restore their reproductive imbalances.
What if there was something you desperately wanted but were told you may never have it? What if you always dreamed of having it, and now your dream may never come true. This is the reality of many men and women suffering from infertility. Infertility is a disease and diagnosed after one year of not getting pregnant from unprotected sex. The CDC reports that this disease affects 12% of women of reproductive age in the US. As a fertility practitioner, I see firsthand the effects that an infertility diagnosis has on couples.
National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW) occurs during the third week of April. For those diagnosed, now is a great time to bring awareness about infertility and connect with others. I use NIAW to personally share my fertility journey.
Below are ways my clients have used NIAW to increase awareness.
SHARE YOUR STORY
When going through fertility issues, it can be easy to think you are the only one in the world dealing with them. In fact, fertility rates are on the rise. When I was trying to conceive, I did not want the world to know that I was struggling. But when I finally opened up about my struggles, I received hundreds of emails and messages on social media about people who were having struggles. Now, people ask for my help because I was able to successfully conceive. You do not have to share your struggles with the world, but opening up to people you trust can be a healing experience. NIAW is an excellent time to share your story and show people that you are among the millions of people with fertility issues.
CONNECT WITH OTHERS
Join support groups and community organizations. Many people, such as myself and The National Infertility Association, have virtual events throughout NIAW that you can participate in. Network with the other attendees. Post your story in the chat and see what responses you get.
There are also many social media groups on Facebook and Peanut where you can connect with other women. Some of the women in my Facebook Group will have meetups with the women that live close by. Use NIAW to connect with other women. You may gain lifelong friends in the process.
CELEBRATE THE VICTORIES
The journey to having a baby is filled with ups and downs. There are victories along the journey that should be celebrated. Whether that is finally getting regular periods, getting a positive ovulation test, or saving enough money for a procedure. Capture and celebrate every moment. Keep a journal of your experience so you can share it with your future child.
There’s no doubt dealing with fertility can be challenging. NIAW is a time to celebrate the women that are navigating life with this difficult diagnosis.
I invite you to join Circle+Bloom’s private facebook fertility support group and Dr. Vita’s facebook group so you can tell your story and connect with others.
